Carlos Alcaraz Ends Sinner’s Streak to Clinch First Italian Open Title

The Spanish prodigy Carlos Alcaraz downs World No. 1 Jannik Sinner in straight sets to claim his 7th ATP Masters 1000 title and end Sinner’s 26-match winning run.

Carlos Alcaraz shattered Jannik Sinner’s 26-match winning streak and dreams of home glory by clinching his first Italian Open title in commanding fashion on Sunday. The 21-year-old Spaniard defeated the world number one 7-6(5), 6-1 in a thrilling final at Foro Italico, capturing his seventh ATP Masters 1000 crown in just one hour and 44 minutes.

The opening set was a tense battle, with Alcaraz saving two set points before prevailing in the tiebreak. From there, he shifted gears, dominating the second set with aggressive baseline play and clinical shot-making to seal the championship.

“This is a very special win for me,” Alcaraz said after the match. “I’m really happy to get my first title here in Rome, and I hope it’s the first of many. But most of all, I’m just glad to see Jannik back on court playing at such a high level.”

The win marks Alcaraz’s 19th career tour-level title, tying him with Sinner for the most titles among players born in the 2000s. It also marks his third ATP title of the season, after Rotterdam and Monte Carlo, making him the first player this year to achieve that feat. His tour-leading 30 match wins in 2025 further reinforce his standing as one of the game’s most dominant forces.

Alcaraz now joins an elite club—Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Gustavo Kuerten, and Marcelo Rios—as one of only five men to have won all three ATP Masters 1000 titles on clay: Monte Carlo, Madrid, and now Rome.

Sinner, who returned to competitive tennis in Rome following a three-month hiatus after his Australian Open triumph, was seeking to become the first Italian man to win in Rome since Adriano Panatta in 1976. Despite the loss, Sinner’s performance in his comeback tournament was widely applauded.

“Making the final here after such a long break is no small feat. Jannik’s a champion and he’ll be back stronger,” Alcaraz added.

The win also narrows the ATP Head-to-Head between the two young stars, with Alcaraz now leading 7–4 in their rivalry. With both players in electric form, the 2025 tennis season promises more high-stakes clashes between these two titans of the next generation.
