The high-stakes limited-overs event kicks off on February 19, marking a historic moment for the country after nearly three decades of waiting.
Cricket fans in Pakistan have endured years of uncertainty since the 2009 terror attack on the Sri Lanka cricket team in Lahore, which led to a prolonged absence of international matches. However, the return of major events, including bilateral series in recent years, has rekindled the spirit of cricket in the nation.
The eight-nation tournament will see some of the world’s top cricket teams battling it out, with Pakistan, India, New Zealand, and Bangladesh placed in Group A, while England, South Africa, Australia, and Afghanistan make up Group B. However, due to security concerns, India will play all their matches in the UAE as part of a hybrid model. The much-anticipated India vs. Pakistan clash is scheduled for February 23 in Dubai.
The ICC Champions Trophy, initially launched in 1998, was once a biennial tournament before shifting to a four-year cycle. Last held in 2017, when Pakistan triumphed over India in a historic final in England, the tournament was absent from the international calendar for nearly eight years. Pakistan was initially awarded the hosting rights in 2008, but security concerns led to its relocation to South Africa in 2009. India was supposed to host the 2021 edition, but it was replaced with the T20 World Cup.
The 2025 edition features teams that qualified based on rankings after the 2023 World Cup, ensuring a highly competitive field.
New Zealand suffered a significant blow ahead of the tournament as star pacer Lockie Ferguson was ruled out due to injury. His absence is a setback for the Kiwis, who will rely on Kyle Jamieson as his replacement.
Meanwhile, Pakistan will be relieved to have Haris Rauf fully fit after a recent injury scare. With speedsters playing a crucial role in the Champions Trophy, Rauf’s availability strengthens Pakistan’s bowling attack.
With just hours to go before the tournament opener, excitement is at an all-time high. Fans across Pakistan are eager to witness world-class cricket, and stadiums are set to be packed with passionate supporters.
As the cricketing world turns its attention to Pakistan and the UAE, the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 promises an exhilarating contest between the best teams, intense rivalries, and moments that will be etched in cricketing history.
