Champions Trophy 2025: Sunil Gavaskar Predicts India’s Dominance Over Australia in Semifinal-Here's Why
As India gears up to face Australia in the Champions Trophy 2025 semifinal, legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has backed Rohit Sharma & Co. as strong favorites to win. Gavaskar pointed out that Australia lacks the kind of quality spinners that could trouble Indian batters, making India’s spin-heavy attack a decisive factor in the match.
Speaking to India Today, Gavaskar emphasized that Australia’s depleted pace attack—missing key players like Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc—further weakens their chances.
“On this surface, yes, because Australia don’t seem to have the kind of spinning attack, apart from the fact that they are missing key players like Cummins, Hazlewood, and Starc,” Gavaskar said.
🔹 India’s spinners will dominate: Australia lacks high-quality spinners to counter India’s proven spin quartet of Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja, and Varun Chakravarthy.
🔹 Batting first may not be an advantage: Gavaskar believes that while Australia’s batting is aggressive, India might be better off chasing rather than setting a total.
🔹 The Dubai pitch isn’t impossible to bat on: While New Zealand struggled against Indian spinners in the last match, Gavaskar noted that the pitch wasn’t unplayable, and the key difference was India’s outstanding bowling performance.
📌 Spin-heavy attack – India is likely to continue with four spinners to exploit Australia’s vulnerability against quality spin.
📌 Middle-order resilience – India’s batters, particularly Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, and Hardik Pandya, will play a crucial role in stabilizing the innings.
📌 Bowling first could be ideal – Given Australia’s aggressive batting, India may prefer to chase rather than defend a total.
