Champions Trophy: Anil Kumble’s Tough Advice to Gambhir- Time to Transition From ‘Legacy Players’

With the 2027 World Cup in focus, Kumble urges Gambhir to make bold selection calls regarding senior stars.

February 21, 2025: India’s Champions Trophy Start & Senior Players Under Pressure

India began their Champions Trophy 2025 campaign with a commanding six-wicket victory over Bangladesh in Dubai, thanks to Shubman Gill’s unbeaten century and Mohammed Shami’s five-wicket haul. However, the match also reignited concerns over the form of veteran players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who struggled to leave an impact with the bat.

With the 2027 ODI World Cup approaching, discussions around transitioning away from senior players have gained momentum. Former India head coach Anil Kumble has now sent a strong message to Gautam Gambhir, urging him to take tough selection decisions after the Champions Trophy.

Kumble’s Call for a New Era in Indian Cricket

Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, Anil Kumble emphasized that this tournament will be crucial in deciding the future of senior Indian players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, and Mohammed Shami.

“This is a very important tournament for a coach who has to make those tough calls in transitioning from the legacy players to new talent. But that’s the job of the coach, to make those hard decisions,” Kumble remarked.

The former Indian captain added that win or lose, Gambhir must start planning for the 2027 World Cup now, focusing on younger players and team stability.

“In any World Cup, you’re looking at building a squad that has played at least 20-25 matches together. Ideally, at the end of this tournament, you must start looking ahead to the next World Cup.”

Gambhir’s Challenge: Balancing Experience & New Talent

Gambhir, who successfully led India in T20Is with a young squad, now faces a bigger challenge—deciding which senior players still fit into India’s long-term plans.

Kumble also urged Gambhir to integrate younger players into the ODI setup, saying:

“Do the seniors make it to 2027? Or do we give youngsters the opportunity to take the team forward and build a strong unit in white-ball cricket? These are questions Gambhir needs to address.”

Virat Kohli’s Struggles Highlight the Concern

Virat Kohli’s underwhelming 22 off 38 balls against Bangladesh was a stark reminder of his recent struggles. He failed to rotate strike, playing nine consecutive dot balls at the start of his innings. His only boundary was an uncontrolled pull shot, and he was eventually dismissed while attempting a risky cut shot.

While Kohli remains a modern-day great, questions over his ODI longevity are being raised, especially considering his slowing strike rate and struggles against spinners.

What’s Next?

With crucial matches ahead, all eyes will be on India’s senior players and their performances. Will Gambhir back experience, or will he usher in a new era of Indian cricket post the Champions Trophy 2025?
