Champions Trophy: Babar Azam Absent From Practice As PCB Chief Urges Pakistan To Beat India "At Any Cost"
February 23, 2025: Babar Azam’s Absence Raises Eyebrows As PCB Chief Demands Victory Against India
Pakistan’s star batter Babar Azam was noticeably missing from the team’s final practice session ahead of their must-win Champions Trophy clash against India on Sunday. His absence has fueled speculation about his place in the playing XI, especially after facing criticism for his slow knock in Pakistan’s opening loss to New Zealand.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi visited the team’s training camp at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Saturday, where he reportedly urged the players to “win at any cost” to silence critics. With Pakistan on the brink of elimination, Naqvi emphasized the significance of the match and personally interacted with captain Mohammad Rizwan, head coach Aqib Javed, and key players, including Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf.
Reliable sources indicate that Naqvi, who was displeased with the team’s selection and performance, wanted to boost morale and ensure an all-out effort against India. He later told the media, “It would be a great game. Our team is fully prepared and in form. We are with them, win or lose.”
Babar Azam, Pakistan’s former captain, has come under fire after his 64-run knock off 94 balls in the opening match, which many criticized as too slow for a steep chase. However, interim head coach Aqib Javed stated that Babar had “chosen to rest” instead of participating in the crucial practice session.
While there is no official word on whether Babar will be part of the playing XI against India, his absence has sparked speculation that he may be dropped or rested for the high-pressure encounter.
Pakistan’s defeat to New Zealand has put them in a do-or-die situation. If they lose to India, they will be eliminated from the tournament. Despite being the official hosts of the Champions Trophy, Pakistan has been forced to play its matches in Dubai due to India’s refusal to travel to Pakistan.
When asked about India playing their matches in Dubai instead of Pakistan, Naqvi responded sharply, “You should ask the Indians if they would have accepted the same situation if roles were reversed.”
With tensions high and stakes even higher, all eyes will be on whether Babar Azam features in Pakistan’s lineup or if the team management makes a bold call for the crucial encounter.
