Champions Trophy: Rohit Sharma’s ODI Form Big Concern, Yet India Coach Backs Skipper

Indian batting coach Sitanshu Kotak remains confident in Rohit Sharma’s ability to bounce back in ODIs, ahead of crucial matches against England.

February 9, 2025: Indian batting coach Sitanshu Kotak has expressed confidence in Rohit Sharma’s ability to regain form in the ODI format, brushing aside concerns following the Indian captain’s underwhelming performance in the first ODI against England in Nagpur. Despite a comfortable 4-wicket victory for India within 39 overs, Rohit’s failure to make an impact with the bat has drawn attention.

Coach’s Perspective on Rohit’s Form

Addressing the concerns, Kotak emphasized that Rohit’s recent form in Tests should not be conflated with his abilities in ODIs. “I personally don’t think there’s any problem. The last three one-dayers Rohit has played, he has scored 58, 64, and 35,” he said. Kotak highlighted Rohit’s contributions in the ODI series against Sri Lanka last summer, where he was among the few consistent performers.

Kotak also pointed to Rohit’s impressive record in ODIs, including 31 centuries, to underline his prowess in the format. “Sometimes, when there’s a lean patch, I don’t think there’s any reason to worry. Rohit has always bounced back,” Kotak added, dismissing doubts about the Indian captain’s capabilities.

Rohit’s Challenges Across Formats

Rohit’s struggles in recent Test series, particularly against New Zealand and Australia, have invited criticism. Falling early in almost every innings, the Indian skipper’s place at the top of the order in Tests has been questioned. However, Kotak insists that Rohit’s issues in Tests should not overshadow his proven track record in ODIs. “Yes, Tests were tough, but ODIs are a different story. He’s always been a reliable run-scorer in this format,” Kotak explained.

Rohit’s Take on the Criticism

Ahead of the series, Rohit Sharma himself addressed concerns about his batting form during a press conference, stating, “What kind of a question is that? This is a different format, different time. We know there will be ups and downs in cricket, and I’ve faced that a lot in my career. Every series is fresh, and I’m focused on moving forward.”

Looking Ahead

India now looks to continue their strong start to the series, with Rohit Sharma hoping to silence critics in the second ODI at Cuttack’s Barabati Stadium. The team will rely on their captain to regain his form and lead from the front as they build momentum ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy.
