Champions Trophy: Sanjay Manjrekar Weighs In On Harshit Rana vs Arshdeep Singh For India vs Pakistan Showdown

February 23, 2025: As the much-anticipated India-Pakistan clash in the ICC Champions Trophy approaches, former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has highlighted the impressive performance of pacer Harshit Rana, saying that his energy and wicket-taking ability make him an invaluable asset to the team.

India is looking to avenge their loss to Pakistan in the 2017 Champions Trophy final when they meet their arch-rivals in Dubai. With two seasoned pacers, Mohammed Shami and Arshdeep Singh, expected to take the new ball, the question remains: Will Arshdeep make way for the energetic Harshit Rana, or will Rana continue his solid run in ODIs?

Over the past three months, Rana has made a remarkable debut in all formats and has impressed with his speed, intensity, and ability to take crucial wickets. In his four ODIs so far, he has claimed nine wickets at an average of 19.67, with best figures of 3/31. Notably, four of his wickets have come in the middle overs, showcasing his ability to bowl in key phases of the game. His consistent performances have made him a vital member of India’s pace attack, with many experts believing that he could play a crucial role in breaking partnerships during the middle overs.

Rana’s rapid rise to prominence comes on the back of a breakthrough Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season, where he took 19 wickets in 13 matches for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at an average of 20.15, finishing as the fifth-highest wicket-taker in the tournament.

Addressing the growing debate between Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana, Sanjay Manjrekar, speaking as a JioHotstar expert, said, “I think this team management is happy with Harshit Rana. He has taken wickets for India whenever he has played. With the new ball, India has Shami, Arshdeep. You need someone who can take wickets in middle overs. The way Harshit has bowled with his energy in middle overs, he has convinced everyone with his performances. Arshdeep has been unlucky, he has not got many chances.”

With Arshdeep not having played as many games recently, the decision to go with Harshit Rana for the middle overs is likely to provide the team with the balance they need to attack in all phases of the game. His ability to break partnerships in the middle overs will be critical, especially against a Pakistan side that has a strong batting lineup.

India’s bowling strategy will likely revolve around Harshit Rana supporting Shami, who recently made his return to international cricket after a long injury layoff. Another key factor is Hardik Pandya, who not only provides crucial overs at 140 km/h pace but also adds depth to the batting lineup.

As both teams prepare for a showdown that is sure to deliver plenty of drama, India’s bowling setup will need to be at its best, and Harshit Rana’s inclusion could be a game-changer in the high-pressure encounter.
