China establishes a new county in Xinjiang near PoK and Afghanistan, highlighting rising focus on border security and regional control.
April 12, 2026: China has set up a new county named Cenling in its Xinjiang region, close to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and Afghanistan, in a move seen as strengthening border security. Located near the Karakoram and the narrow Wakhan Corridor, the new administrative unit underscores Beijing’s concerns over potential infiltration by Uyghur militant groups.
This marks the third new county created in Xinjiang in just over a year, following earlier moves that drew objections from India. New Delhi had protested against previous counties, including those covering parts of the disputed Aksai Chin in Ladakh, citing sovereignty concerns. Cenling will reportedly fall under the administration of Kashgar, a key hub on the historic Silk Road and a gateway to South and Central Asia.
Experts say the move reflects China’s increasing focus on governance and control in sensitive frontier regions, particularly amid concerns over militant activity linked to groups like the East Turkestan Islamic Movement. The region’s proximity to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor further adds to its strategic importance, as Beijing looks to secure vital trade and security routes.
