China Welcomes PM Modi’s Remarks, Calls India-China Ties a ‘Ballet Dance Between Dragon and Elephant’

Following PM Modi’s interview, China acknowledges India’s role in fostering dialogue, emphasizing a cooperative partnership for global stability.

Beijing, March 17, 2025:

In response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent interview with American podcaster Lex Fridman, China has welcomed his remarks, calling the relationship between the two nations a “ballet dance between dragon and elephant.”

The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Mao Ning, praised the “positive” outlook shared by PM Modi, emphasizing the need for dialogue over discord. She highlighted that despite past tensions, both nations have historically learned from each other and contributed to human progress.

“The two countries have maintained friendly exchanges for over 2,000 years. As the two largest developing nations, India and China share a common goal of growth and stability,” Mao Ning stated.

India-China Border Relations: ‘Return to Normalcy’

PM Modi, in his interview, asserted that after his recent meeting with President Xi Jinping, relations along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh have begun to stabilize.

“Our focus is to ensure that these differences don’t escalate into disputes. We emphasize dialogue, as it is the only way to build a stable and cooperative relationship,” PM Modi stated.

China echoed this sentiment, referring to the successful meeting between PM Modi and President Xi in Kazan, Russia, in October 2024, which laid a strategic roadmap for bilateral ties.

From Conflict to Cooperation

Following the deadly Galwan Valley clashes in 2020, border tensions between India and China had been strained. However, since late 2024, both countries have resumed military patrols in Ladakh, marking a step toward de-escalation.

“The only choice for both sides is a cooperative ‘pas de deux’—a ballet dance between dragon and elephant,” Mao Ning remarked, reiterating comments by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

A Shared Vision for Global Stability

China emphasized that both countries must collaborate to strengthen the Global South, promote regional stability, and contribute to world peace.

PM Modi also stated that India-China cooperation is not just beneficial but crucial for global prosperity.

“Our cooperation is essential for world peace,” he affirmed.

As both nations approach the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties, China expressed readiness to work closely with India, implementing shared understandings and fostering economic growth.
