Colombia Sends Presidential Plane for Deportees Amid Tensions with US

Colombia responds to US tariffs with measures to ensure dignity for deported nationals and calls for better migration protocols.

Bogota [Colombia], January 27: In a move to ensure a “dignified return” for Colombian nationals deported from the United States, Colombian President Gustavo Petro deployed the presidential plane to pick up the affected individuals, following escalating tensions with the US. This comes after Colombia initially refused to accept US deportation flights, prompting US President Donald Trump to impose retaliatory tariffs and sanctions.

The presidential plane was made available to facilitate the deportees’ return, the Colombian President’s Office said in a statement on Sunday.

“The Government of Colombia, under the direction of President Gustavo Petro, has made the presidential aircraft available to facilitate the dignified return of fellow nationals. This measure reflects the Government’s commitment to guaranteeing conditions of dignity for its citizens, ensuring that Colombians, as patriots and rights-holders, are not banished from their homeland,” the statement read.

A Unified Command Post for Dignified Treatment

President Petro’s administration has established a Unified Command Post (PMU) on migration, consisting of representatives from the Defense Ministry, the Chancellor’s Office, the Presidency, and the People’s Office. The PMU’s goal is to create and review protocols to ensure that deported Colombians are treated with dignity and that human rights are upheld throughout the deportation process.

“Colombia reaffirms its commitment to protecting its nationals and will continue leading efforts to find humane and just solutions to migration challenges,” the statement added.

Commitment to Dialogue with the US

The Colombian government stated its intent to maintain active discussions with US authorities to develop agreements that ensure respectful and humane deportation protocols.

“Colombia remains in touch with the United States, seeking agreements to establish minimum standards of respect and dignity for fellow citizens during deportation processes,” the statement noted.

US Retaliation and Escalating Tensions

The diplomatic row escalated after President Petro blocked two US military deportation flights carrying migrants. In response, President Trump announced 25 per cent “emergency tariffs” on Colombian imports, a travel ban for Colombian citizens, visa revocations for officials, and sanctions targeting allies and supporters of Petro’s administration.

Earlier, President Petro had called for the US to improve its treatment of migrants, rejecting the deportation flights and asserting that “Colombian migrants cannot be treated as criminals.”

Colombia’s Regional Efforts

President Petro emphasized Colombia’s broader commitment to addressing migration challenges.

“Colombia will continue leading regional and international efforts to find humane solutions to migration issues,” the statement concluded, reinforcing the nation’s stance on protecting its citizens while advocating for improved migration policies globally.
