Former India cricketer Krishnamachari Srikkanth lashes out at Ruturaj Gaikwad over field placements and bowling decisions as Chennai Super Kings suffer a third consecutive loss in Indian Premier League 2026.
CSK’s Third Straight Loss Triggers Criticism: Srikkanth Slams Gaikwad’s Captaincy After Defeat To RCB
The Chennai Super Kings endured another disappointing outing in the Indian Premier League 2026 season on Sunday night, suffering their third consecutive defeat — this time against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
CSK were beaten by 43 runs after failing to chase down a massive total of 250, with their bowling and fielding performance coming under intense scrutiny. Following the loss, former India cricketer Krishnamachari Srikkanth, who has long been associated with the franchise, delivered a sharp criticism of captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, questioning his tactical decisions throughout the match.
Kohli Drop Turns Costly For CSK
A key turning point in the match came early in Virat Kohli’s innings.
The star batter was dropped on just 7 runs by Shivam Dube at long-on — an error that proved extremely costly. Kohli capitalised on the reprieve and went on to hit multiple boundaries, helping Royal Challengers Bengaluru build strong momentum on their way to a mammoth total.
Reacting to the incident, Srikkanth criticised the field placements made by Gaikwad.
“His field placements were horrible. You can’t have Shivam Dube at long-on. The best fielders have to be there at key positions,” Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel.
He also pointed out how RCB positioned their best fielders strategically, citing Kohli and Phil Salt as examples of players placed in crucial catching positions.
Questions Raised Over Bowling Changes
Srikkanth did not limit his criticism to field placements. He also questioned Gaikwad’s bowling rotation decisions, especially during crucial phases of the match.
He noted that Jamie Overton bowled an excellent opening over but was not utilised effectively afterward.
“After a good first five overs, he should have held off RCB. Overton bowled an excellent first over, and then you cut him for long before bringing him back. Why not bowl him two to three overs on the bounce when he is bowling well?” Srikkanth remarked.
Another decision that drew criticism was giving the 17th over to Noor Ahmad, which Srikkanth suggested added pressure during a critical phase.
He also questioned the lack of opportunities given to emerging players like Prashant Veer, stating that developing young bowlers is essential for long-term team success.
CSK Facing Early Pressure In IPL 2026
Three consecutive defeats at the start of the season have left Chennai Super Kings in a difficult position in the tournament standings.
With qualification for the playoffs becoming increasingly challenging, the team now faces mounting pressure to quickly regroup and deliver consistent performances in the upcoming matches.
The early setbacks have also intensified scrutiny on captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, who is still establishing himself in a leadership role after taking over responsibilities for the franchise.
The Road Ahead For CSK
Despite the poor start, the season is far from over. However, CSK will need to address key issues, particularly in fielding efficiency and bowling strategy, to stay competitive in the league.
If the current trend continues, the five-time champions could find themselves struggling to keep playoff hopes alive much earlier than expected.
