March 7, 2025: Days After Clash With Zelensky, Trump Threatens “Large-Scale” Sanctions on Russia
Washington, D.C.: Days after a heated exchange with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, US President Donald Trump has warned Russia of large-scale economic sanctions and tariffs if a ceasefire and final peace agreement with Ukraine is not reached soon.
This announcement follows a wave of intense overnight strikes on Ukraine by Russian forces, further escalating tensions in the nearly three-year-long war.
In a strongly worded social media post, Trump stated:
“Based on the fact that Russia is absolutely ‘pounding’ Ukraine on the battlefield right now, I am strongly considering large-scale banking sanctions, sanctions, and tariffs on Russia until a ceasefire and FINAL SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT ON PEACE IS REACHED.”
He also urged both sides to immediately negotiate, adding:
“To Russia and Ukraine, get to the table right now, before it is too late. Thank you!!!”
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine three years ago, the United States, United Kingdom, European Union, Canada, Australia, and Japan have imposed over 21,000 sanctions against Moscow, targeting:
Despite these measures, Russia has continued its military campaign, leading to renewed debates over more aggressive economic deterrents.
This latest move comes just days after Trump’s reported disagreement with Ukrainian President Zelensky, though details of their exchange remain unclear.
Trump has long been critical of US financial and military aid to Ukraine, stating that Europe should take on a larger share of the burden. However, this latest statement indicates a shift in his stance, as he now considers direct economic pressure on Russia.
With Moscow showing no signs of backing down, it remains uncertain whether Trump’s potential sanctions will force a diplomatic resolution or further escalate tensions between the US and Russia.
As the global geopolitical landscape shifts, all eyes remain on how Russia, Ukraine, and the US navigate this crisis in the coming weeks.
