DC Apartments Standoff: Why Is Rep. Cory Mills Suing Over $85K in Unpaid Rent?

Florida Republican Rep. Cory Mills is facing a lawsuit filed by his Washington, D.C. landlord for allegedly failing to pay over $85,000 in rent, according to court documents submitted to D.C. Superior Court.

The legal complaint, filed by Bozzuto Management Company, accuses Mills of not paying rent between March and July 2025, totaling $85,009. The monthly rent for the high-end property is reported to be $20,833.

Bozzuto is now seeking court approval to evict the congressman and requesting that Mills deposit future monthly rent payments with the court while the lawsuit proceeds. The court has scheduled an initial hearing for September 8, 2025.

🏠 Resident Ledger Shows Repeated Late Payments

A resident ledger attached to the lawsuit indicates that Mills has frequently paid rent late since moving into the property in June 2023. The ledger also shows multiple late fees and missed payments, prompting legal action.

In January 2025, Mills was served a notice demanding over $18,000 in past-due rent, with a deadline to pay by February 26. That notice also warned of the company’s intent to pursue legal action.

📱 Mills Responds on Social Media

Mills has not issued an official statement, but on Monday, he posted screenshots on X (formerly Twitter) claiming he repeatedly requested rent payment links from property management and experienced technical issues when trying to pay.

“I repeatedly asked for payment links and again as I tried with management today, it failed to process,” Mills wrote.

Bozzuto Management’s attorney has not yet responded publicly to these claims.

🚨 Previous Police Incident Raises Further Scrutiny

In February 2025, D.C. police opened an investigation into an alleged assault involving Mills at an apartment building located on the same block as the rental property. Mills’ office strongly denied any wrongdoing, and no charges were filed. A police spokesperson confirmed Mills was not arrested in that case.

🧾 About Rep. Cory Mills

Rep. Cory Mills has represented Florida’s 7th Congressional District since January 2023. A political newcomer with a background in the military and defense contracting, Mills has aligned himself with conservative hardliners in Congress.

As of now, neither Mills’ office nor Bozzuto Management has provided a detailed comment on the ongoing legal dispute.
