Delhi Aims for Drug-Free Status in Three Years, LG Saxena Leads Anti-Drug Initiative

New Delhi, December 2: Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has directed a coordinated effort by the Delhi Police, Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), and other relevant departments to make the national capital drug-free within the next three years. DCP Crime Bhisham Singh announced the plan on Sunday, detailing the steps that will be implemented to tackle drug abuse and peddling in the city.

“On November 26, the LG held a state-level review meeting with all departments involved. He directed that Delhi Police, NCB, and others work towards achieving a drug-free Delhi within three years,” said Singh.

The initiative will involve a comprehensive strategy starting with a pilot project in December 2024. Special teams will be formed to identify and target areas of drug peddling, conduct recoveries, and arrest offenders. Singh emphasized that the operation will adopt a targeted approach, focusing on high-risk zones to dismantle drug networks.

Earlier, the Lieutenant Governor announced a month-long anti-drug campaign commencing on December 1. This aggressive initiative forms part of a larger framework to achieve a drug-free Delhi ahead of the nationwide goal for a drug-free India, as stated in a press release from Saxena’s office.

During the ninth review meeting of the State-Level Committee Narco Coordination Centre (NCORD), Saxena highlighted the social and geopolitical ramifications of the drug menace. He warned that drug abuse not only harms the youth’s health but is also being strategically used to weaken India’s younger generation and, consequently, the nation itself.

The campaign will include awareness drives, enforcement actions, and interdepartmental collaboration to address all dimensions of the drug problem.
