Delhi BJP MLAs to Meet on February 17 to Decide CM Candidate
The newly elected BJP MLAs in Delhi will meet on Monday, February 17, at 3 PM at the Delhi BJP State Office to finalize their Chief Ministerial (CM) candidate. The meeting comes after BJP’s historic victory in the Delhi Assembly elections, where it secured 48 out of 70 seats, marking its return to power after 27 years.
The party had not announced a CM face before the elections, making this meeting crucial for selecting Delhi’s next Chief Minister. Sources indicate that the swearing-in ceremony may take place on February 18 at Ramlila Maidan, ahead of the current Assembly term ending on February 23.
The Delhi Assembly elections, held on February 5, were a direct battle between BJP and AAP. The results, announced on February 8, saw BJP winning 48 seats, while AAP managed only 22, marking a significant setback for the Arvind Kejriwal-led party.
Several senior AAP leaders, including Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, Saurabh Bhardwaj, and Satyendra Jain, failed to retain their seats, leading to a major political shift in Delhi.
Several prominent names are being considered for the Chief Minister’s post:
1️⃣ Parvesh Verma – The most prominent contender, Verma defeated AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi constituency and played a key role in BJP’s victory.
2️⃣ Satish Upadhyay – A former Delhi BJP president, Upadhyay also served as the Delhi Youth Wing president, making him a strong candidate.
3️⃣ Ashish Sood – A senior BJP leader and a prominent Punjabi face in Delhi’s politics.
4️⃣ Jitendra Mahajan – Another strong candidate known for his grassroots connection with the BJP cadre.
5️⃣ Vijender Gupta – A seasoned BJP leader and former Delhi Assembly Opposition leader.
6️⃣ Rekha Gupta – If BJP opts for a female Chief Minister, former Delhi Mayor Rekha Gupta, a first-time MLA, could be a surprise pick.
With BJP’s majority secured, the decision on the CM candidate is expected on February 17, followed by a swearing-in ceremony on February 18 at Ramlila Maidan. This will mark BJP’s return to power in Delhi after nearly three decades.
