Delhi Experiences A Spell Of Fog And Chill As Winter Deepens In The Capital

December 13, 2024: Delhi continues to experience a prolonged winter chill, with temperatures remaining low as the city grapples with dense fog and chilly conditions. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the minimum temperature in Safdarjung was recorded at 9°C, while Palam was colder at 6.3°C. Despite some localized changes, there has been no significant variation in temperatures across most of Northwest India, with cold conditions persisting.

Minimum Temperature: 9°C (Safdarjung), 6.3°C (Palam)

Morning Chill: The city woke up to a chilly morning, with fog blanketing parts of the capital. The chill lasted until around 7 am before gradually easing.

Temperature Trend: On Wednesday, Delhi experienced the coldest December morning of the season, with a minimum of 4.9°C. The maximum temperature reached around 23°C, providing some relief in the afternoon.

Air Quality:

Delhi’s air quality has taken a significant hit, as smog and fog conditions continue to affect the region. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the air quality index (AQI) has entered the “poor” category in various parts of the city. Some of the reported AQI levels include:

  • Alipur: 280
  • Ashok Vihar: 296
  • DTU: 228
  • Anand Vihar: 309
  • Dwarka Sec 8: 315
  • Nehru Nagar: 334
  • IGI Airport (T3): 281
  • Rohini: 329
  • Pusa: 309
  • Mundka: 307

The AQI is measured at 277 at 7 am on Friday, categorizing it as “poor” (AQI between 201-300). This level of pollution can lead to health issues, especially for sensitive individuals.

Temperature Changes: Some locations in Northwest India, including Patiala, Karnal, Rohtak, Sikar, Alwar, and Phalodi, have recorded temperature increases of more than 2°C. The rise in minimum temperatures is attributed to variable wind conditions, although the overall trend in the region remains cold.

Cold Wave Warning: The IMD has issued warnings for cold wave conditions in isolated pockets across several regions including Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Saurashtra & Kutch, Delhi, and Jammu & Kashmir (Dec 12-16). Delhi itself is expected to experience cold wave conditions until Dec 13.

Jammu & Kashmir: Sonamarg has been covered in heavy snowfall, adding to the winter charm of the region.

Rajasthan: People in Rajasthan are turning to bonfires for warmth as temperatures continue to dip across the state.

The cold and foggy weather is expected to persist in Delhi and nearby areas. The minimum temperature is likely to stay in the range of 6°C to 9°C, with cold wave conditions expected to impact Delhi through December 13. Air quality is likely to remain in the “poor” category, so people are advised to limit outdoor activities and take precautions, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions.

This extended cold spell and poor air quality are becoming a regular feature of Delhi’s winter, emphasizing the need for measures to address pollution and improve air quality.
