New Delhi, December 15: As a cold wave sweeps across the national capital, with temperatures dropping to single digits, numerous people have sought refuge in Delhi’s shelter homes. These facilities, managed by the Delhi government, are providing essential amenities such as food, medical care, and warm bedding to those in need.
Visuals from areas like Jama Masjid and AIIMS Delhi captured people huddled in thick blankets, striving to stay warm amid the biting cold. At a shelter near AIIMS, over 40 people utilized the facility on Saturday night, according to Ved Pal, who works at the shelter.
“This is a family shelter. We provide proper beds, unlimited blankets, and food twice a day, along with tea and rusk in the morning. If anyone has health issues, a doctor visits us, or we take them to AIIMS hospital nearby,” Pal told ANI.
In another shelter housing 22 people, Somu Malhotra detailed the available resources, saying, “This shelter accommodates both families and bachelors. We provide proper beds, regular meals, and basic medical assistance. AIIMS is nearby for emergencies, and we also keep a first-aid box with general medicines like paracetamol.”
At Jama Masjid, Roshan Kumar praised the facilities provided by the Delhi government. “There are four shelters here, with capacities ranging from 30 to 100 people. We receive three meals a day, along with medical care. The facilities are well-maintained and very helpful during this cold wave,” he said.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings of ‘cold wave to severe cold wave’ conditions across North India, including Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh. IMD scientist Soma Sen Roy predicted a further drop in temperatures by 1-2°C due to the northwesterly winds.
On December 14, the minimum temperature in Delhi was recorded at 8°C, and it is forecasted to dip to 7°C today. The IMD also indicated that the cold wave is likely to persist in North and Central India for the next one to two days.
As temperatures plummet, Delhi’s shelter homes are playing a critical role in protecting the city’s most vulnerable residents from the harsh winter conditions.
