Delta Airlines Plane Flips on Snowy Runway in Toronto; Investigation Underway

Two runways closed as officials probe crash; 17 passengers injured, no fatalities reported

Ontario [Canada], February 18: A Delta Airlines flight crash-landed at Toronto Pearson International Airport on Monday, flipping upside down on a snow-covered runway. While no fatalities were reported, 17 passengers sustained injuries, prompting an immediate response from airport authorities and emergency services.

Toronto Pearson International Airport CEO Deborah Flint confirmed that two runways will remain closed for the next several days as the investigation unfolds.

Flight Crash Disrupts Airport Operations

During a press briefing, Flint stated that all flight arrivals and departures were initially halted across three other runways before operations resumed around 5 p.m. local time. However, the two affected runways will stay closed for further investigation.

“The remaining two runways will stay closed while an investigation takes place for the rest of tonight and into the next several days,” Flint said.

Delta Airlines had initially reported 18 injuries but later clarified that 17 passengers had been hospitalized. The flight was carrying 76 passengers and four crew members, with 22 passengers identified as Canadian nationals, while the rest were from other countries.

Delta Airlines Issues Statement

Delta Airlines addressed the incident in a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter):

“Delta Connection flight 4819, operated by Endeavor Air using a CRJ-900 aircraft, was involved in a single-aircraft accident at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) at around 2:15 p.m. ET on Monday. The flight originated from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP).”

The airline further reassured that there were no fatalities, stating:

“Initial reports indicate there are no fatalities, and 18 customers with injuries have been transported to area hospitals. Our primary focus is taking care of those impacted.”

Delta CEO Expresses Concern

Delta CEO Ed Bastian expressed concern over the crash and thanked the emergency responders for their swift action.

“The hearts of the entire global Delta family are with those affected by today’s incident at Toronto Pearson International Airport. I want to express my thanks to the many Delta and Endeavor team members and the first responders on site,” Bastian said in a statement.

Delta has activated its Passenger Inquiry Center for family members and loved ones seeking updates on those affected.
