Did PM Modi Prevent a Nuclear War? Poland Minister Claims Modi Persuaded Putin to Refrain from Tactical Strikes
March 17, 2025: New Delhi:
Amid escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine, Poland’s Deputy Foreign Minister Władysław Teofil Bartoszewski made a startling revelation: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi may have persuaded Russian President Vladimir Putin not to use tactical nuclear weapons during the early stages of the war.

“We are very grateful for India’s involvement. We appreciate the fact that PM Modi, at the early stages of the war, did persuade President Putin not to use tactical nuclear weapons,” Bartoszewski told CNN-News18 on Monday.
His remarks came amid renewed diplomatic efforts to broker a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, with world leaders including Donald Trump engaging in talks with Putin over a possible resolution.
PM Modi has maintained a neutral stance in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, advocating peaceful negotiations instead of war. During his recent podcast with Lex Fridman, Modi emphasized his close ties with both Russia and Ukraine, stating:
“I can sit with President Putin and say that this is not the time for war.”
Modi also shared his message to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, advising him that “regardless of how many allies support you, a resolution will never come from the battlefield. It will only happen when both Russia and Ukraine come to the negotiating table.”

Since 2022, speculation over Russia’s potential use of tactical nuclear weapons has loomed large. Putin had previously warned that Russia would use “all means necessary” to defend its annexed territories.
Despite these threats, many Western analysts believe Russia’s nuclear posturing is aimed at deterrence rather than actual use. A 2025 Estonian Intelligence report deemed an actual nuclear strike “highly improbable,” attributing Putin’s threats to psychological warfare against the West.

The US, NATO, and European leaders have consistently condemned Russia’s nuclear threats, warning of severe repercussions should nuclear escalation occur. Former US President Donald Trump has announced plans to speak directly with Putin on Tuesday regarding a possible ceasefire.
Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron has proposed discussions on extending a European nuclear shield to deter further Russian aggression.
Poland’s revelation about Modi’s diplomatic intervention adds another layer to India’s growing influence in global peace efforts.
As ceasefire talks gain momentum, Russia’s true nuclear intentions remain uncertain. However, with global powers actively involved in de-escalation efforts, diplomatic negotiations may steer the war away from nuclear catastrophe.
