The quake occurred at a shallow depth of 48 km, which makes it more likely to be followed by aftershocks and can lead to more intense ground shaking at the surface.

This is the second significant earthquake to hit Alaska in less than a week. Just four days prior, on July 17, a stronger magnitude 7.3 earthquake also rattled the region at a shallow depth of 36 km, prompting a tsunami warning that was later cancelled.
The Alaska-Aleutian subduction system is one of the most seismically active regions globally, known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity.
