Eid-ul-Adha 2025: Saudi Moon Sighting Date Set, Festival Likely On This Date

The crescent moon sighting for Dhul Hijjah 1446 AH will determine Eid-ul-Adha and Hajj dates across the world. Here’s what to expect.

MAy 26, 2025: Eid-ul-Adha, the “Feast of Sacrifice,” is one of the most significant Islamic festivals celebrated worldwide. It commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s unwavering devotion to God. The festival’s exact date hinges on the sighting of the Dhul Hijjah crescent moon, which also marks the beginning of the Hajj pilgrimage season.

Saudi Arabia’s Moon Sighting Date & Eid Date
In Saudi Arabia, Eid-ul-Adha 2025 is expected to be celebrated on Friday, June 6, provided the Dhul Hijjah crescent moon is sighted on Tuesday, May 27, 2025. If the moon is not sighted, Dhul Hijjah will start on May 29, and Eid-ul-Adha will be observed on June 7.

The Saudi Supreme Court has called on Muslims to attempt the moon sighting, either with the naked eye or binoculars, and report any sightings to the nearest court. This practice ensures an official and verified start of the Islamic month.

  • Moon Sighting: Tuesday, May 27, 2025
  • Start of Dhul Hijjah: Wednesday, May 28, 2025
  • Day of Arafah: Thursday, June 5, 2025
  • Eid-ul-Adha: Friday, June 6, 2025

Global Eid Dates & Variations
Muslims in the UAE, Qatar, Oman, Jordan, Syria, Iraq, and countries like the US, UK, France, and Canada will also attempt to sight the crescent moon on May 27. Depending on local moon sightings, Eid-ul-Adha celebrations could vary slightly.

In countries like India, Pakistan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, Hong Kong, and Brunei, the moon sighting will occur on Wednesday, May 28.

  • If sighted on May 28: Eid-ul-Adha will be on Saturday, June 7, 2025
  • If not sighted: Eid will be observed on Sunday, June 8, 2025

Eid-ul-Adha Traditions
In Saudi Arabia, Eid-ul-Adha typically spans three to four days (10th to 12th/13th of Dhul Hijjah). Festivities include special prayers, the ritual slaughter of livestock, sharing meals with family and the less fortunate, and acts of charity. The Day of Arafah, observed before Eid, is the holiest day for Muslims and is marked by fasting and intense prayers, especially by Hajj pilgrims.
