Elon Musk Alleges ‘Massive Cyberattack’ Behind Global X Outage

The SpaceX CEO claims a well-resourced, large-scale group or nation is behind the attack, as thousands of users worldwide report disruptions on the platform.

Washington, DC [US], March 11: Elon Musk, the owner of the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), has alleged that a “massive cyberattack” was responsible for the global outage that affected thousands of users on Monday.

Musk claimed that the attack was not a routine incident but rather a highly coordinated effort involving significant resources, potentially orchestrated by a large group or even a nation-state.

“There was (still is) a massive cyberattack against X. We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources. Either a large, coordinated group and/or a country is involved. Tracing,” Musk wrote on X.

His comments came in response to an X user who suggested that recent protests against DOGE (Dogecoin) and Tesla store disruptions might be linked to the downtime, implying a targeted attack on Musk’s businesses.

Widespread Global Disruptions

The outage was widely reported by users across the globe, with Downdetector, a website that tracks online outages, registering a peak of 2,612 problem reports around 3 PM. A second wave of disruptions hit between 6 PM and 7:30 PM, affecting at least 1,312 users.

While Downdetector identifies real-time issues by detecting unusually high problem reports, X remains unstable as of the latest update.

Frustration Mounts Among Users

X users worldwide expressed frustration over the outage, with many venting their displeasure on Downdetector.

One user took a direct jab at Musk, writing:

“Musk needs to fire himself. Terrible at running X.”

Meanwhile, an Indian user reported:

“Not working in India right now.”

Is X Under Attack?

Cyberattacks on major platforms are not uncommon, but Musk’s explicit allegations of a well-organized operation raise concerns about the scale and intent behind the disruption.

With X still struggling to stabilize, the tech world is closely watching how Musk and his team handle this latest challenge.
