March 8, 2025: Elon Musk and Marco Rubio Reportedly Clash Over Staff Cuts in Trump Cabinet Meeting

Musk pressures Rubio to cut more State Department staff; Trump denies conflict, calls both “fantastic” leaders.

Washington, D.C.: A heated exchange reportedly took place between U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and billionaire White House adviser Elon Musk during a Trump Cabinet meeting on Thursday, as Musk pressed for deeper cuts to federal bureaucracy.

According to The New York Times, Musk, who was tasked by Trump with eliminating large portions of the federal workforce, accused Rubio of resisting major staff reductions and claimed that the State Department had fired “nobody.”

Rubio pushed back strongly, highlighting that 1,500 State Department employees had already accepted early retirement buyouts as part of a restructuring effort.

The report claims that Rubio sarcastically asked Musk whether he wanted him to rehire those employees just to fire them again for show.

Tensions Over Musk’s “Blunt-Force” Approach

The meeting reportedly took place after multiple agency heads raised concerns to White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles about Musk’s aggressive approach to downsizing.

Additionally, Republican members of Congress have been receiving calls from frustrated constituents over the deep cuts Musk has been advocating.

Trump Denies Reports of Tension

When asked about the incident during an Oval Office press briefing on Friday, Trump dismissed the reports, insisting there was no clash.

“No clash, I was there. You’re just a troublemaker,” Trump told a reporter.

“Elon gets along great with Marco, and they’re both doing a fantastic job,” he added.

Trump also praised Rubio and Musk, stating:

“Marco has done unbelievably as Secretary of State. And Elon is a unique guy and has done a fantastic job.”

What’s Next?

With Musk’s role in government reform continuing to stir debate, it remains to be seen how much control he will have over federal staffing policies and whether tensions within the administration will escalate further.

Meanwhile, Rubio and other Cabinet officials appear to be walking a fine line between implementing restructuring plans and maintaining functional government operations.
