England Stun India with Thrilling 22-Run Victory at Lord’s in Third Test of Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy

Despite Ravindra Jadeja’s valiant 61*, India collapses chasing 193 as England takes 2-1 series lead in dramatic Day 5 finish at Lord’s.

[London, UK] – July 14, 2025 — In a dramatic turn of events, England defeated India by 22 runs in the third Test at Lord’s, taking a crucial 2-1 lead in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series. The final day saw a stunning collapse from India, despite a brave unbeaten knock of 61 by Ravindra Jadeja*, as England’s bowlers delivered under pressure to seal one of their most memorable Test wins in recent history.

This latest heartbreak for India joins a list of infamous failed run chases, reminiscent of Galle 2015, Edgbaston 2018, and Wankhede 2024.

England’s Grit Overcomes Jadeja’s Resistance

India began Day 5 at 58/4, needing 135 more runs for victory with KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant at the crease. Expectations were high after their solid first-innings partnership of 141. However, England’s bowling unit, spearheaded by Jofra Archer, Ben Stokes, and Chris Woakes, had other plans.

Jofra Archer ignited England’s charge early, clean bowling Rishabh Pant (9) with a searing delivery. Shortly after, Stokes trapped KL Rahul (39) LBW with a peach of an inswinger, which was confirmed on review.

Archer then struck again, dismissing Washington Sundar for a duck, plunging India into deeper trouble at 6 down.

A Gritty but Doomed Resistance

The pressure now fell on Ravindra Jadeja and Nitish Kumar Reddy, who stitched together a stoic 30-run stand before Chris Woakes broke through just before lunch, sending Reddy back for 13 off 53.

Post-lunch, Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah forged an admirable 132-ball partnership, adding 37 runs for the ninth wicket. Just when it appeared India might stage a miraculous comeback, Ben Stokes returned to dismiss Bumrah (5 off 54) and tilt the scales back toward England.

Mohammed Siraj then joined Jadeja, and the pair kept hopes alive with careful defense and singles. However, Shoaib Bashir delivered the final blow, dismissing Siraj for 4, ending India’s innings at 170 all out.

First Innings Mirror Image, Second Innings Make the Difference

The Test began with England captain Ben Stokes choosing to bat first. A resilient innings led by Joe Root (104) helped England post 387, matched by India thanks to KL Rahul’s century. Both teams were tied after the first innings, setting the stage for a gripping second-innings battle.

England folded for 192 in their second innings, with Washington Sundar spinning a web (4/22), well-supported by Jasprit Bumrah (2/38) and Mohammed Siraj (2/31). That set India a target of 193 — one that proved just out of reach.

Final Session Fireworks and Fiery Tempers

Day 3 saw tempers flare as India captain Shubman Gill confronted England’s Zak Crawley over time-wasting tactics. That edge added fire to the contest, and on Day 4, India stormed back with aggressive bowling — but England’s late push with the ball proved decisive.

Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer, Stokes, and Woakes were relentless in the final innings. Carse and Stokes shared pivotal wickets on Day 4, setting up a tense final day, which England capitalized on with fierce determination.

What’s Next?

With this thrilling 22-run win, England leads the series 2-1 ahead of the fourth Test at Old Trafford, Manchester. The next encounter promises fireworks as India aims to bounce back and level the series.
