Former Wrestling Federation of India president and BJP leader Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh has reiterated his claim that the allegations of sexual harassment against him are part of a “conspiracy by the Congress party.” His comments come in the wake of protests led by prominent wrestlers such as Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik, and Vinesh Phogat last year, which called for action against him over the allegations.
While addressing a rally in Gonda, Singh specifically pointed fingers at former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Hooda and his son Deepender Hooda, suggesting that they are behind the allegations. He stated, “When allegations were put against me, I said that it’s a conspiracy by Congress, Deepender Hooda, and Bhupinder Hooda. I have said it earlier, the country is saying it today.”
Currently, Singh is facing multiple sexual harassment charges, and both the complainants and the Delhi Police have opposed his plea to quash the case based on maintainability grounds. Singh’s petition was heard by the Delhi High Court, where a bench led by Justice Neena Bansal Krishna remarked that it appeared to be an attempt to overturn the case after the trial had already begun.
The court questioned Singh’s decision to file a single plea challenging both the framing of charges and the proceedings, suggesting that it might be an “oblique way” to address the matter. Singh’s counsel, Rajeev Mohan, argued that the FIR and subsequent legal actions against him were driven by a hidden agenda to undermine his reputation.
The court has instructed Singh’s counsel to submit a short note within two weeks, with the case set for further consideration on September 26. As the legal proceedings unfold, the controversy surrounding Brij Bhushan Singh continues to draw significant attention, highlighting issues related to accountability and the treatment of women in sports.
