‘Free America’ Protests Set to Disrupt Fourth of July Festivities Across U.S.

Nationwide rallies led by Women’s March, Indivisible, and People’s Union USA aim to oppose Trump policies, authoritarianism, and systemic injustice

July 2, 2025: As Americans prepare for Independence Day parades and fireworks, a large number of citizens are instead gearing up for the “Free America” protests — a coordinated national movement opposing President Donald Trump’s policies and what organizers describe as growing authoritarianism in the United States.

Dubbed “No Kings 2.0”, the protest effort will see rallies, silent demonstrations, and grassroots events take place on July 4th across all 50 states, with hundreds of local actions already confirmed. Organizers say the movement symbolizes a renewed stand for “real freedom, justice, and dignity” in the face of social, political, and economic unrest.

Major Organizers and Events Across the U.S.

🔹 Women’s March

The progressive group born after Trump’s 2017 election is leading over 199 Free America events nationwide. From Providence, Rhode Island to Freeport, Maine, gatherings will be held on porches, in backyards, and in public spaces to “build a vision of a Free America brick by brick.”

One of the key protests in Rhode Island will be managed by the 50501 campaign, an initiative pledging 50 protests in 50 states under one unified message. Their flagship event is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Rhode Island State House on Smith Street.

“This 4th of July, we gather to honor its spirit of dissent and stand together for the freedom, justice, and dignity every community deserves,” read a group post.

🔹 Indivisible

Local chapters of Indivisible, which rose in opposition to Trump-era policies, are also organizing “No Kings 2.0” rallies in several locations, particularly in the Massachusetts-Rhode Island border towns like Swansea. Their events emphasize defending democracy and rejecting authoritarianism, especially on the symbolic anniversary of America’s break from monarchy.

“Not now. Not ever. No kings in America,” states a rally post from Topsfield, MA.

🔹 The People’s Union USA

Following its earlier “economic blackout” in February, the activist group The People’s Union USA plans a “silent protest” this Independence Day.

“With everything happening — war threats, ICE raids, and unchecked corruption — we are not free. We are not independent,” said John Schwarz, the group’s leader, on social media. “Let silence speak louder than fireworks.”

They have called on Americans to boycott parades, skip firework shows, and avoid big box store spending on July 4, instead encouraging people to support local businesses or observe the day quietly at home.

A History of Resistance

Earlier this year, many of these same groups staged similar protests during Memorial Day in response to the Trump administration’s aggressive crackdown on immigration protests in Los Angeles. This renewed wave of resistance signals a broad coalition of grassroots organizations united under a common cause: to defend democracy and reject authoritarianism ahead of the November 2025 elections.
