This is the second gunfight reported in South Kashmir within 48 hours, as security forces intensify anti-terror operations following the Pahalgam attack.

A fresh encounter broke out early Thursday between security forces and terrorists in the Tral region of Awantipora in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district. The joint operation, involving the Indian Army and J&K Police, was launched based on intelligence about the presence of militants in the Nader and Tral areas of South Kashmir.
Confirming the ongoing operation, the Kashmir Zone Police posted on X (formerly Twitter), “Encounter has started at Nader and Tral area of Awantipora. Police and security forces are on the job.”

This marks the second encounter within 48 hours in the Kashmir Valley.
Earlier this week, three terrorists were neutralised during an encounter in Shopian district. That gunfight, which initially began in Kulgam, shifted to the forest area of Shoekal Keller in Shopian after militants opened fire during a cordon-and-search operation. The Indian Army confirmed the operation resulted in the elimination of three “hardcore terrorists.”

Increased counter-insurgency operations have been underway in the region since the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 lives. In response, India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting multiple terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), escalating bilateral military tensions.

Though a ceasefire agreement was reached between India and Pakistan on May 10 to halt military actions across land, sea, and air, Pakistani forces reportedly violated the agreement within hours, prompting Indian forces to remain on high alert across sensitive border and hinterland zones.
