Fresh Quake Hits Myanmar: 5.1-Magnitude Tremor Jolts Region Already Reeling From Massive Destruction

New aftershock strikes Mandalay just two days after deadly 7.7-magnitude quake killed over 1,600 people across Myanmar and Thailand.

Mandalay, Myanmar | March 30, 2025 — Myanmar was rocked by another earthquake on Sunday, this time measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The tremors, which occurred just two days after the devastating 7.7-magnitude quake, struck around 12:38 PM IST near the Mandalay region, already devastated by the earlier disaster.

The National Center for Seismology (NCS) registered the quake at 4.6 magnitude, while the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported it as 5.2, highlighting slight differences in seismic readings.

💥 Series of Aftershocks Worsen Crisis

This tremor is one of over 14 aftershocks that have hit the region since the 7.7-magnitude quake on March 28, according to USGS data. The most powerful aftershock so far measured 6.7, striking just 10 minutes after the main quake.

These aftershocks have further shaken areas across:

  • Rural Myanmar villages, already struggling with a civil war
  • Thailand, especially high-rise buildings in Bangkok
  • China’s Yunnan province, where tremors were also reported

The earthquake is also expected to impact Thailand’s tourism sector, with a predicted 10–15% dip in foreign tourist arrivals, especially from neighboring countries.


🔍 Ongoing Response

India has launched Operation Brahma, a multi-pronged humanitarian and rescue effort involving:

  • 80-member NDRF team
  • Naval aid via INS Satpura and INS Savitri
  • Relief materials, tents, water purifiers, medical kits

Meanwhile, global aid continues pouring in, with offers from the US, EU, and Asian neighbors.


As the region grapples with continued seismic activity, concerns remain over rescue operations being delayed by damaged infrastructure, communication blackouts, and ongoing civil unrest in parts of Myanmar.
