🗓️ May 10, 2025 | Just 24 hours ago, US Vice President JD Vance had said the India-Pakistan conflict was “fundamentally none of our business.” Today, the United States emerged as a key broker in securing a surprise ceasefire between the nuclear-armed neighbours after what President Donald Trump described as a “long night of talks.”
Ceasefire Announcement
At 3:35 PM IST, Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs) from both sides held a direct conversation, following which India and Pakistan agreed to stop all hostilities — on land, air, and sea — from 5:00 PM. A second round of talks between the DGMOs is scheduled for May 12 at noon, confirmed Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.

US Policy Reversal
Vice President Vance, known for his non-interventionist views, had told Fox News just yesterday:
“We’re not going to get involved in a war that’s fundamentally none of our business. America can’t tell the Indians to lay down their arms. We can’t tell the Pakistanis either.”
But within 24 hours, the tone had shifted dramatically.

Trump, Rubio Lead Diplomatic Push
President Trump, on his platform Truth Social, wrote:
“After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE.”
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the breakthrough, revealing details of American engagement:

“Over the past 48 hours, VP Vance and I engaged with senior Indian and Pakistani officials, including PM Modi, PM Sharif, EAM Jaishankar, Gen. Asim Munir, and NSA Ajit Doval.”
Rubio further announced the start of broader peace talks at a neutral venue, praising both nations’ leaders for their “wisdom and statesmanship.”
Backdrop Of Escalation
The ceasefire follows three consecutive nights of Pakistani drone and missile attacks targeting Indian military and civilian installations. India responded with precision airstrikes on Pakistani airbases and terror infrastructure under Operation Sindoor, and later warned that any future act of terror by Pakistan would be treated as an “act of war.”
