Goodbye Pin Codes, DIGIPIN is Here! All You Need to Know about the New Digital Addressing in India
New Delhi | June 5, 2025 —
India has taken a revolutionary leap in location identification with the launch of DIGIPIN, a digital address system developed by the Department of Posts in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and ISRO’s NRSC. This system assigns a unique 10-character alphanumeric code to every 4-metre by 4-metre square across the country, enabling ultra-precise addressing unlike anything the current pincode system offers.

DIGIPIN (Digital PIN) is a geospatial address that maps exact coordinates (latitude and longitude) into a 10-character code. This geocoded solution allows users to pinpoint their home, office, or establishment within a few metres, ensuring delivery accuracy and faster emergency response.

| Feature | Pincode | DIGIPIN |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage | Broad area/locality | Exact 4m x 4m location |
| Address Components | Depends on streets, area | Purely geolocation-based |
| Personalisation | General area-level | Unique to specific physical point |
| Utility | Postal sorting | E-commerce, emergency, governance |
While your existing postal address remains valid, DIGIPIN is envisioned as a complementary digital layer—one that could eventually make street names and house numbers optional for many service providers.
