Harbhajan Singh Predicts One-Sided India vs Pakistan Clash in Champions Trophy

Former spinner Harbhajan Singh downplays the hype around the much-anticipated India-Pakistan encounter, calling it a “one-sided game” due to Pakistan’s inconsistency.

New Delhi, February 16:

As the cricketing world gears up for the highly-anticipated India vs Pakistan clash in the upcoming Champions Trophy on February 23, former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh has urged fans to temper their expectations, predicting a one-sided affair rather than a thrilling contest.

While the Indo-Pak rivalry has historically delivered high-octane encounters, Harbhajan believes the massive gap in quality and consistency between the two teams will likely lead to a dominating performance by India.

“Overhyped” Match Will Lack Drama, Says Harbhajan

Speaking on his YouTube channel, the former off-spinner dismissed the hype surrounding the encounter, stating that Pakistan lacks the firepower to challenge a strong Indian squad.

“We will discuss the overhyped match between India and Pakistan. Yes, it is overhyped because there is nothing in it. India is a strong team. Pakistan is inconsistent. If you compare the numbers with the Indian team, the picture will become clear,” Harbhajan said.

India’s Form vs Pakistan’s Struggles

India heads into the Champions Trophy in red-hot form, having whitewashed England 3-0 in their last ODI series. Meanwhile, Pakistan has struggled, recently losing a home Tri-Series to New Zealand and South Africa.

  • Pakistan’s Recent Performances:
    • Lost to New Zealand in the group stage
    • Defeated South Africa with a record 353-run chase
    • Crumbled against New Zealand in the final, raising concerns over their form

Given these contrasting trajectories, Harbhajan sees India as the clear favorites for the clash in Dubai.

“I think the Pakistan team is undercooked. Apart from Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan, there are not many batters. I feel it will be a one-sided game. I don’t think there will be much entertainment. India is far ahead in this contest,” he added.

Last Champions Trophy Encounter – A Painful Memory for India

The last India-Pakistan encounter in the Champions Trophy was the 2017 final, where Pakistan stunned India with a 180-run victory at The Oval under Sarfaraz Ahmed’s captaincy. However, India has dominated the rivalry since then, including a thrilling last-ball win over Pakistan in the 2024 T20 World Cup.

What to Expect on February 23?

  • India’s Strengths: Balanced squad, match-winners in all departments, experienced batting lineup
  • Pakistan’s Weaknesses: Over-reliance on Babar Azam & Rizwan, inconsistent middle order, shaky bowling attack

While history suggests India vs Pakistan is always a spectacle, Harbhajan Singh believes this time, the contest might not live up to the hype.
