“He’s a Lunatic”: Massive ‘Hands Off’ Protests Erupt Against Trump Across US, Europe
April 6, 2025: ‘Hands Off’ Protests Against Trump Rock US and Europe, As Citizens Decry Policies and Rhetoric
In the largest demonstrations since Donald Trump’s return to the White House, tens of thousands of protesters poured into streets across the United States on Saturday to protest his sweeping and controversial policies. From Washington D.C. to New York, Los Angeles to Denver, citizens voiced anger over what they describe as Trump’s dismantling of democratic norms.

The coordinated “Hands Off” protests, organized by progressive groups including MoveOn and Women’s March, spanned more than 1,000 cities and every congressional district. Demonstrators targeted Trump’s actions on downsizing government, eroding civil liberties, anti-abortion measures, and aggressive trade wars that have spooked markets and strained global alliances.
“I’m angry all the time,” said New York-based artist Shaina Kesner. “A bunch of privileged, white alleged rapists are controlling our country. It’s not great.”
In Washington, thousands filled the National Mall, joined by Representative Jamie Raskin, who previously led impeachment efforts against Trump. “No moral person wants an economy-crashing dictator who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing,” Raskin declared to the crowd.
In Los Angeles, one woman dressed as a character from The Handmaid’s Tale held a banner reading, “Get out of my uterus,” a clear rebuke of Trump’s anti-abortion agenda.
Protests echoed across Europe as well. In London, Liz Chamberlin, a dual UK-US citizen, called Trump’s policies “economic lunacy.” In Berlin, 70-year-old retiree Susanne Fest summed it up bluntly: “The guy is a lunatic.”
Even as demonstrators decried Trump’s authoritarian tilt—highlighting moves to jail opponents and marginalize immigrants—the White House brushed off the backlash. Trump himself remained defiant: “My policies will never change,” he said Friday.
Yet public sentiment appears to be shifting. Polls show Trump’s approval ratings hitting a new low amid intensifying discontent. Protesters like Dominic Santella in Boston warned of fascist overreach. “We’re stopping a leader from jailing his opponents and random immigrants,” he said.
Despite the anger, the rallies were mostly peaceful. Families, elders, and young activists filled streets in a show of solidarity. Organizers in Washington estimated over 20,000 attendees—far surpassing expectations.
Activist Graylan Hagler summed up the mood: “They’ve woken a sleeping giant. We will not sit down, we will not be quiet, and we will not go away.”
