Hijacked Plane Over Vancouver Airport Sparks Jet Scramble and Arrest
July 17, 2025: A dramatic aviation incident unfolded over British Columbia on Tuesday when a small plane, allegedly hijacked from Victoria, flew erratically around Vancouver International Airport, prompting a swift military response.
At around 1:30 p.m., U.S. F-15 Eagle fighter jets were scrambled from a base in Washington state, while Canadian CF-18 Hornets were also preparing to intercept the aircraft, according to NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command). The Cessna 172, reportedly carrying only the pilot, circled the skies before landing safely around 1:45 p.m.

Once the plane touched down, NORAD called off the response. “For reasons of operational security, NORAD does not disclose details about aircraft numbers or deployment bases,” said spokesperson David Lavallee.
The incident forced a temporary shutdown of airspace above Vancouver International Airport, causing delays and diversions. Richmond police confirmed they received a hijack alert around 1 p.m., and the plane’s sole occupant was arrested upon landing.
Authorities continue to investigate the pilot’s intentions, which remain unclear.
