Hindi: The Soul and Identity of India, Says Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla

Om Birla emphasizes Hindi’s unifying role in India’s diversity, highlights AI-driven initiatives to enhance access to Hindi literature and governance tools.

Etawah (Uttar Pradesh), December 16: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla praised the pivotal role of the Hindi language in India’s cultural and national development, calling it the “soul and identity of India.” Speaking at the annual convention of the ‘Etawah Hindi Seva Nidhi,’ he underscored Hindi’s unifying power in India’s diverse cultural landscape.

“Hindi binds our cultural diversity in the thread of unity and gives it strength,” Birla said during his address.

AI Translating Lok Sabha Debates to Hindi

Birla highlighted technological advancements aimed at making Hindi more accessible. He shared that efforts are underway to translate Lok Sabha debates into Hindi using Artificial Intelligence (AI) models, specifically neural language tools.

“A humble effort is being made to translate Lok Sabha debates into Hindi using Neural Language Model of AI,” read a post shared by the Speaker’s office on X.

The Speaker lauded Hindi’s adaptability to modern technologies, noting that AI is being leveraged to make Hindi literature and poetry more accessible worldwide. “Hindi’s flexibility has allowed it to adapt to changing technologies. The richness of Hindi literature and poetry is now being shared across the globe more efficiently through AI,” he said.

Growing Use in Governance and Technology

Birla also spoke about Hindi’s increasing presence in justice, administration, and internet technology. He highlighted that Supreme Court judgments are now being translated into multiple languages to ensure accessibility.

“Times have changed. Earlier, Supreme Court judgments were written in only one language. Now, the Court has started translating its rulings into multiple Indian languages,” Birla said.

He added that parliamentary processes have embraced India’s linguistic diversity, with 22 Indian languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution now supported during parliamentary debates.

Hindi as a Unifying Force

Reflecting on India’s Constitution-making process, Birla acknowledged the vision of leaders from diverse linguistic backgrounds who recognized Hindi’s potential as a unifying force for the nation.

“When we look at governance systems and democratic institutions worldwide, Hindi’s importance in uniting India’s diversity and reinforcing its unity becomes evident,” he remarked.

Birla concluded by affirming that Hindi, enriched by its cultural heritage, continues to play a vital role in India’s nation-building efforts, serving as a symbol of unity amidst diversity.
