“His Best Spot Has Been No. 4..” : Usman Khwaja On Steve Smith

Australian opener Usman Khawaja has expressed his views on Steve Smith’s batting position in the Test team, particularly in light of David Warner’s retirement. Smith was moved to the top of the order following Warner’s exit, a change that has sparked mixed reactions due to Smith’s inconsistent performance as an opener.

Khawaja believes that Smith should return to his preferred No. 4 position, arguing that it would provide the best balance for the Australian lineup. He stated, “I still think we have the best Test player of my era in the side, in Steve Smith, and his best spot has been number four.”

Khawaja highlighted the decline in Australia’s scores since the batting order changed, noting that the team has only surpassed 300 runs once in eight innings since Warner’s retirement.

He emphasized the importance of team performance, stating, “For me, the number one consideration is ‘what’s best for the team?’. What order scores us the most runs?” Khawaja pointed out that with Smith batting at No. 4 and Warner in the lineup, Australia scored significantly more runs compared to their current performance with Smith opening.

Statistically, Smith’s numbers as an opener have been disappointing, averaging just 28.50 with only one fifty in eight innings, while he boasts an impressive average of 61.51 at No. 4.

Looking ahead, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series between India and Australia is set to begin on November 22, with a series of exciting matches scheduled, including the traditional Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The series promises to be a thrilling contest, and the batting order decisions will likely be critical to Australia’s success.
