"I Will Always Be Unapologetically Canadian": Trudeau Bids Farewell as Mark Carney Takes Over
Ottawa [Canada], March 14: On his final day in office, Justin Trudeau delivered a heartfelt farewell message to the nation, vowing to always remain “boldly and unapologetically Canadian.” The outgoing Prime Minister of Canada shared a video on X (formerly Twitter), expressing pride in the country and urging citizens to continue standing up for what is right.
“I am so proud of Canadians,” Trudeau said. “I am proud to have served a country full of people who stand up for what’s right, rise to every occasion, and always have each other’s backs when it matters the most.”
He added, “This may be my last day in this office, but I will always be boldly and unapologetically Canadian. My only ask is, no matter what the world throws at us, you always be the same.”
Trudeau’s departure paves the way for Mark Carney, the newly elected Liberal Party leader, who will take the oath as Canada’s 24th Prime Minister on Friday at 11 AM EDT at Rideau Hall.
Carney, the former Governor of the Bank of Canada and Bank of England, met Trudeau on his first day as Liberal leader to discuss the transition period. By the end of the day, Carney assured that the handover would be “seamless and quick.”
In the past few days, Carney has been holding key meetings in Ottawa, working behind the scenes to ensure a smooth transfer of power. Reports indicate that he has divested all his assets into a blind trust, a necessary step before assuming office.
As Trudeau prepares to formally tender his resignation to Governor General Mary Simon, Carney is set to unveil his cabinet amid tight political competition between the Liberal and Conservative parties.
In his final speech as Liberal Party leader, Trudeau reflected on his ten years in office, emphasizing his party’s accomplishments and urging Canadians to safeguard their democracy.
“I am damn proud of what we’ve done over these past 10 years for the middle class and for the people working hard to join it,” he told the audience at the Liberal Leadership Convention.
He stressed the need for continued efforts to keep Canada strong, warning against complacency in democracy:
“Democracy is not a given. Freedom is not a given. Even Canada is not a given,” he said. “None of those happened by accident. None of them will continue without effort.”
As Carney steps in, he faces a divided political landscape with polling showing a neck-and-neck race between the Liberals and Conservatives. Rising concerns over Canada-US relations, economic policies, and foreign affairs will be among the new PM’s biggest challenges.
Trudeau’s farewell marks the end of an era, while Carney’s leadership opens a new chapter in Canadian politics—one that will determine the country’s future direction in the coming years.
