ICC Test Rankings Shuffled: Here Are the Top 5 Batters
July 9, 2025: ICC Test Rankings – England’s Harry Brook has ascended to the No. 1 position in the ICC Men’s Test Batting Rankings, dethroning fellow Englishman Joe Root. The 25-year-old’s commanding knock of 158 runs in the second Test against India in Birmingham helped him reach 886 rating points, surpassing Root by 18 points and reclaiming the top spot for the first time since December last year.
The biggest story, however, came from India’s Shubman Gill, who skyrocketed to a career-best No. 6 after etching his name in cricketing history. Gill became only the second player ever to score over 150 runs in both innings of a Test — 269 and 161 — amassing a staggering 430 runs, the second-highest aggregate in a single Test match. He jumped 15 places in the rankings, having started the series at No. 23.
The rankings update also brought good news for South Africa’s Wiaan Mulder, who struck a monumental 367 not out — now the highest Test score by a South African batter. Mulder leaped 34 places to 22nd in the batting chart. His three wickets in the match also lifted him in the bowling rankings (up to 48th) and helped him claim third place among Test all-rounders, behind Ravindra Jadeja and Mehidy Hasan.
Meanwhile, Jamie Smith entered the top 10 for the first time after scoring 184 and 88*, rising 16 spots in the batting list. India’s Ravindra Jadeja climbed to 39th in the batting rankings after valuable contributions of 89 and 69*, while also retaining his No. 1 spot in the all-rounder list.
India’s pace duo also made waves in the bowling rankings. Mohammad Siraj moved up to 22nd after claiming seven wickets in the Edgbaston Test, and newcomer Akash Deep surged 39 places to 45th following his maiden 10-wicket match haul.
With the India-England Test series now level at 1-1, the updated ICC rankings reflect the outstanding individual performances that have lit up the World Test Championship.
