IDF Reports Highest Soldier Death Toll Since Yom Kippur War Amid Ongoing Conflict

Over 890 Israeli soldiers have lost their lives since October 7, with rising cases of operational casualties and mental health concerns.

Jerusalem [Israel], January 3: The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported 891 soldier casualties since the October 7 Hamas attacks, marking the highest death toll for the Israeli military since the Yom Kippur War. The figures include fatalities from combat operations, accidents, and suspected suicides, highlighting both the human cost of the conflict and the psychological toll on soldiers.

In 2023, the IDF recorded 558 fatalities, including 512 deaths from operational activities—with 329 casualties occurring on October 7 alone. Additionally, 16 soldiers died in accidents, while 17 deaths are under investigation as suspected suicides.

In 2024, the toll rose further, with 363 soldiers killed295 in combat operations, 23 in accidents, and 21 suspected suicides. Notably, 12 of these suspected suicides involved reservists.

Rising Mental Health Concerns

The IDF has reported an alarming increase in suspected suicide cases among soldiers, rising from 14 in 2022 to 17 in 2023 and 21 in 2024. The military attributes this surge partly to the psychological pressures of war.

In response, the army launched a 24/7 mental health hotline, receiving over 3,900 calls since October 2023. Additionally, 800 mental health officers have been recruited, new mental health clinics established, and commanders are being trained to recognize distress signals among personnel.

Landmark Ruling on Military Burials

In December 2023, Israel’s High Court of Justice made a landmark decision to allow a military burial in a civilian cemetery for Maj. (res.) Asaf Dagan, an Air Force navigator who died by suicide after battling severe PTSD. This ruling has sparked discussions about military burial regulations for soldiers who die under similar circumstances.

Operational Accidents and Safety Measures

Fatal operational accidents remain a concern, with 60 soldiers dying in Gaza and five in Lebanon due to misfires, equipment malfunctions, and other mishaps. The IDF emphasized that every incident undergoes thorough investigation to improve safety protocols.

Most recently, 22-year-old Sgt.-Maj. Yuval Shoham tragically lost his life when he was struck by the rotating turret of his tank during an operation in northern Gaza’s Jabaliya.

Context of the Ongoing Conflict

The current war has become the deadliest for Israel since the Yom Kippur War of 1973, which claimed over 2,500 Israeli soldier lives.

The conflict began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched a large-scale attack on southern Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking 252 hostages. Of the remaining 97 hostages, over 30 are believed to be dead. Additionally, two Israeli civilians and the bodies of two soldiers killed in 2014 remain in Hamas custody.

As the conflict continues, the Israeli military remains focused on operational efficiency, mental health support, and improving safety measures to minimize further casualties.
