IMD Issues Severe Rainfall Alert In Delhi-NCR

June 23, 2025: Severe Rainfall Alert– The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Delhi, Gurgaon, and Faridabad as the national capital and surrounding areas brace for heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds on Monday. The weather conditions signal the imminent arrival of the southwest monsoon, which could reach the region earlier than usual.

According to the IMD’s latest weather bulletin, light to moderate rainfall is expected throughout the day in Delhi, with thunderstorms and wind speeds reaching 30–40 kmph. Similar weather patterns are forecasted for the night. Neighboring cities Gurgaon and Faridabad are also under alert, with heavy showers and lightning expected during the day.

“During evening – Light to Moderate Rainfall, Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning & gusty winds (30–40 kmph),” the IMD noted.

Monsoon Advancing Faster Than Usual

The monsoon, which typically arrives in Delhi around the end of June, may reach the capital as early as June 24, making it the earliest monsoon onset since 2013, when it arrived on June 16. The IMD also stated that favorable conditions exist for the monsoon to further advance over parts of Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, western Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu in the coming 48 hours.

The variability of monsoon onset in recent years is notable — June 28 in 2023, June 30 in 2022, and as late as July 13 in 2021.

Heavy Rain Forecast in Multiple Regions

Beyond the NCR, northwest India is set to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall through June 26, with Madhya Pradesh expected to face extremely heavy downpours on June 23 and 24. Regions like Gujarat, Konkan, and Goa are also in the path of intense monsoon activity.

For Tuesday, June 24, the IMD predicts multiple spells of showers across Delhi — spanning the morning, afternoon, evening, and night — continuing the current weather pattern.

Stay Weather-Wise

Residents in Delhi and neighboring regions are advised to plan commutes accordingly and take necessary precautions due to the potential for waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and lightning risks. The yellow alert indicates a “watch and stay updated” situation, as weather conditions may escalate depending on local developments.
