India a 'Strong Favourite' for Champions Trophy 2025, Says Dilip Vengsarkar
As the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 kicks off in Karachi on February 21, former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar has backed India as one of the strongest contenders for the prestigious tournament.
Speaking to reporters in Varanasi, Vengsarkar highlighted India’s squad depth and form, making them a serious title threat. India, the runners-up of the 2017 edition, will begin their campaign against Bangladesh on February 22 in Dubai.
“India is a strong favourite, and I think they will do well,” said Vengsarkar, expressing confidence in the team’s chances.
Among all the fixtures in the tournament, the biggest spotlight will be on India vs Pakistan, scheduled for Sunday, February 25. Given the historic rivalry and high stakes, the match is expected to be a thrilling contest.
While Vengsarkar refrained from making a firm prediction, he hoped for an Indian victory.
“I can’t predict it, but I think it will be a good match. I hope India wins,” he added.
Pakistan, the defending champions, are hosting the tournament, but India will play all their matches in Dubai under the hybrid model agreed upon by both boards. Vengsarkar emphasized that India’s travel decision lies solely in the hands of the government.
“This depends on the government. If the government says to play, the team will play, and if they refuse, the team won’t play,” he remarked.
With Dubai known for its slow, turning pitches, India has opted for a spin-heavy squad, including seasoned all-rounders like Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and Washington Sundar, along with specialist spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakaravarthy.
India’s pace attack will be led by Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh, and young Harshit Rana, while Hardik Pandya will provide an additional seam-bowling option.
After falling short in the 2017 final against Pakistan, India will be determined to reclaim the Champions Trophy for the first time since 2013. The tournament will test India’s adaptability in Dubai’s conditions, but with a balanced squad, they remain a formidable force.
With Dilip Vengsarkar’s endorsement and the expectations of millions of fans, all eyes will be on Rohit Sharma and his men as they aim for glory in Champions Trophy 2025.
