“India Is the Favourite, But Individual Brilliance Can Change the Game”—Shoaib Malik on Champions Trophy Clash

Former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik backs India as the stronger side but believes match-winning performances from key players could still turn the game in Pakistan’s favor.

Dubai [UAE], February 22: As the much-anticipated India vs Pakistan clash in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 approaches, former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik has picked India as the favorite but warned that moments of brilliance from individual players could decide the match.

“India is the favorite for Sunday’s clash, but at this venue, a century from any batter can help set a good total. If they manage to score 270, it can be defended. Pakistan needs someone to step up, either with the bat or by taking a four or five-wicket haul. To win a 50-over match, individual brilliance from two or three players is crucial,” Malik said in an interview with RevSportz.

Pakistan Struggles While India Builds Momentum

Pakistan’s title defense started poorly, as they suffered a 60-run defeat to New Zealand, leaving them on the brink of an early exit. In contrast, India dominated Bangladesh, securing a six-wicket victory with 21 balls to spare.

Despite India’s strong performance, Virat Kohli’s struggles against leg-spin remain a concern. In his last five ODI innings against leg-spinners, Kohli has averaged just 6.20 and has fallen victim to them five times.

Shoaib Malik’s Advice for Virat Kohli

Malik offered a tactical solution to Kohli’s struggles, suggesting he needs to improve his footwork to counter leg-spinners effectively.

“Yes, Virat has struggled against leg-spinners in his last five innings. When a batter has a weakness against a particular type of bowler, it’s time to fix it. I think he needs to use his feet more, which could help him overcome this issue. When leg-spinners are bowling slow and dragging him forward, he is getting troubled. Better footwork could be the key to counter that,” Malik explained.

As India and Pakistan prepare for yet another thrilling encounter, the spotlight will be on whether India continues its dominance or Pakistan finds a way to turn the tide.
