“India stands in solidarity with the people of Myanmar in this difficult hour,” PM Modi posted on X (formerly Twitter).
The Indian government has already delivered 15 tonnes of relief materials to Yangon via a C130J Indian Air Force aircraft. The supplies include tents, sleeping bags, blankets, ready-to-eat meals, water purifiers, generator sets, solar lamps, and essential medicines.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar confirmed that Indian Navy ships INS Satpura and INS Savitri are en route to Myanmar carrying an additional 40 tonnes of humanitarian aid, set to dock at Yangon port.
An 80-member National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team has also been dispatched from Ghaziabad. This elite search-and-rescue unit, led by Commandant P.K. Tiwary of the 8th battalion, is equipped with rescue dogs and adheres to INSARAG (International Search and Rescue Advisory Group) protocols.
This marks only the third international deployment of the NDRF, following their missions in the 2015 Nepal and 2023 Turkey earthquakes.
The relief materials were handed over to Yangon Chief Minister U Soe Thein by India’s ambassador to Myanmar, Abhay Thakur. More aircraft carrying relief supplies and 60 para-field ambulances are also scheduled to depart shortly from Hindon Air Base.
“Operation Brahma is now fully underway,” tweeted Jaishankar. “India is acting as a First Responder to assist our neighbours in need.”
The Indian Embassy in Myanmar is coordinating relief operations and remains in constant contact with the local Indian community. An emergency helpline (+95-95419602) has been activated.
Myanmar’s military regime officially confirmed the death toll has crossed 1,002, with over 2,376 injured. The quake has flattened buildings, collapsed historic bridges, and severely impacted infrastructure.
Rescue efforts are still underway, with authorities warning that the numbers could rise as more areas become accessible.
India’s rapid deployment under Operation Brahma underscores its role as a regional humanitarian leader and reflects its commitment to ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy.
