India Loose 4th Test: Australia Triumphs in Drama-Filled Final Day, Secures 2-1 Series Lead

“Despite Yashasvi Jaiswal’s valiant 84, India’s batting collapse handed Australia a commanding 184-run victory at the MCG.”

December 30, 2024: Melbourne: In a thrilling conclusion to the 4th Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25, Australia defeated India by 184 runs at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), taking an unassailable 2-1 lead in the five-match series. The final day was marked by intense drama, controversial dismissals, and a resilient yet futile effort from India’s Yashasvi Jaiswal, who scored a fighting 84 runs.

India’s Struggle on Day 5:

Chasing an improbable target, India’s batting lineup failed to rise to the occasion. The team was dismissed for just 155 runs in 79.1 overs. The morning started poorly with Rohit Sharma (9), KL Rahul (0), and Virat Kohli (5) falling cheaply, leaving the middle order exposed to Australia’s relentless bowling attack.

Rishabh Pant played a few attacking shots but fell while attempting a pull shot, and the likes of Nitish Kumar Reddy and Ravindra Jadeja failed to stabilize the innings.

Jaiswal’s Lone Battle:

Yashasvi Jaiswal was the lone warrior, showing immense determination and skill. His gritty 84-run knock was cut short by a controversial dismissal, sparking debate regarding the use of the Decision Review System (DRS).

Australia’s Bowling Dominance:

For Australia, Nathan Lyon emerged as the star bowler, claiming 4 wickets and consistently troubling the Indian batters. Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Scott Boland also chipped in with crucial wickets to seal the victory.

DRS Controversy:

The contrasting use of DRS in dismissals—particularly in Jaiswal’s case—has raised eyebrows and triggered heated discussions among fans and analysts. While one review relied entirely on Snicko, another dismissal bypassed it, leaving many questioning the consistency in decision-making.

Series Standings:

With this victory, Australia leads the 5-match series 2-1, leaving India with no option but to secure wins in the remaining matches to salvage the series.

Final Score:

  • Australia: 474 & 234
  • India: 369 & 155

The spotlight now shifts to the 5th Test, where India must regroup and address their batting frailties to keep their series hopes alive.
