New York [US], November 29: India has been re-elected to the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) for the 2025-2026 term, reinforcing its commitment to promoting global peace and stability. The announcement was made on Thursday via a post on X by the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations.

India’s Legacy in the PBC

India has been an active member of the Peacebuilding Commission since its inception in December 2005. As a founding member and a significant contributor to UN peacekeeping efforts, India’s involvement in the PBC highlights its enduring dedication to conflict resolution and peacebuilding in affected regions.

About the UN Peacebuilding Commission

The Peacebuilding Commission is an intergovernmental advisory body established in 2005 to assist conflict-affected countries in their peacebuilding processes. It works closely with the UN General Assembly, the Security Council, and other UN entities to promote sustainable peace.

Key objectives of the PBC include:

  • Strategic Support: Advising on peacebuilding needs and priorities.
  • Integrated Approach: Bridging various UN entities for coordinated efforts.
  • Knowledge Sharing: Facilitating discussions to share best practices and experiences in peacebuilding.
  • Focus on Mission Transitions: Supporting nationally-led peacebuilding during critical phases of conflict recovery.

The commission fosters collaboration among humanitarian, development, and peacekeeping actors by engaging with representatives from peacekeeping operations, political missions, and UN Country Teams. This integrated approach ensures comprehensive support for conflict-affected regions.

India’s Role in Peace Efforts

India’s re-election underscores its pivotal role in peacekeeping and peacebuilding globally. As one of the largest contributors to UN peacekeeping operations, India has consistently demonstrated its leadership in fostering stability in conflict zones and supporting post-conflict recovery efforts.

India’s continued presence in the PBC aligns with its vision of a multilateral approach to peace, ensuring that the international community works cohesively to address global challenges.
