India Rebukes Pakistan at UN for Raising Kashmir, Calls Remarks ‘Unwarranted and Divisive’

India strongly responds after Pakistan’s repeated references to Jammu and Kashmir at a UN Security Council discussion on peacekeeping reforms.

March 25, 2025: New York – India issued a firm rebuttal at the United Nations Security Council after Pakistan once again raised the issue of Jammu and Kashmir during a discussion on peacekeeping reforms. India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, labelled the remarks as “unwarranted” and reiterated that Jammu and Kashmir “was, is, and will always be an integral part of India.”

“India is compelled to note that the delegate of Pakistan has yet again resorted to unwarranted remarks on the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir,” Mr. Harish said. “Such repeated references neither validate their illegal claims nor justify their state-sponsored cross-border terrorism.”

He also advised Pakistan not to misuse international forums for pushing its “parochial and divisive agenda,” and reminded the UN that Pakistan continues to illegally occupy a portion of Jammu and Kashmir and must vacate it.

The response came after Syed Tariq Fatemi, Special Assistant to the Pakistani Prime Minister, brought up Kashmir during the Security Council debate on the future of UN peacekeeping operations.

India reiterated its long-standing position that while it desires peaceful and neighbourly relations, the onus is on Pakistan to create a terror-free environment for any constructive engagement.

In a recent interview on the Lex Fridman Podcast, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reflected on past outreach efforts, including his invitation to then Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif to his 2014 swearing-in ceremony. He called it a gesture of goodwill, but said “every noble attempt at fostering peace was met with hostility and betrayal.”

PM Modi added that the world today is increasingly aware of Pakistan’s role in fostering terrorism, stating: “The world is no longer confused about where the roots of terror lie.”
