India Sets 608-Run Target in 2nd Test vs England as Gill Shines and Jadeja’s Slow Batting Sparks Controversy

July 06, 2025: India ended Day 4 of the second Test against England in Vizag with complete control over the match. After strong performances from Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant, the hosts declared their second innings at 427 for 6. This left England with an uphill task of chasing 608 runs, which would be a record-breaking achievement if successful.

In reply, England crumbled early, finishing the day at 72 for 3. The major blow came with the dismissal of Joe Root, putting the visitors under immense pressure ahead of the final day’s play.

Gill and Pant Lead from the Front

India’s batting on Day 4 was led by a classy knock from Shubman Gill, who scored 161 with confidence and control. Rishabh Pant also played a rapid innings, scoring 65 runs off just 58 balls. Their aggressive partnership helped India stretch the lead beyond England’s reach and gave them a strong platform to declare.

Jadeja’s Slow Approach Raises Eyebrows

While the top order was in attacking mode, Ravindra Jadeja’s innings sparked criticism. Batting alongside Gill, Jadeja took 68 deliveries to hit just one boundary in the second session. It wasn’t until after the tea break that he shifted gears and hit a six off Shoaib Bashir.

This delayed aggression did not go unnoticed. Former England captains Nasser Hussain and Mike Atherton questioned his passive approach during commentary. Atherton stated that Jadeja should have shown attacking intent before the break, while Hussain added that every moment in a Test match is important and waiting until after tea was odd.

Was Jadeja Waiting for a Message from the Coach?

It’s being reported that Jadeja may have been waiting for a message from head coach Gautam Gambhir before going on the offensive. This lack of urgency possibly delayed India’s declaration, which could become crucial if the match tightens on Day 5.

Although Jadeja remained unbeaten on 69 from 118 balls, many believe a quicker innings could have allowed India more time to bowl out England.

All Eyes on Day 5 as India Eye Victory

Despite the minor criticism, India holds a dominant position. England needs 536 more runs with just seven wickets remaining. Unless something extraordinary happens, India looks set to level the series. However, Jadeja’s cautious batting phase has certainly sparked a debate on intent and timing during crucial moments in Test cricket.
