On Immigration and Illegal Indian Migrants

The topic of immigration was a key aspect of their conversation. Trump expressed confidence in PM Modi’s commitment to addressing the issue of illegal Indian migrants in the US. “Prime Minister Modi will do what’s right,” Trump said, referring to India’s willingness to take back immigrants who entered the US illegally. Reports indicate that approximately 18,000 Indian migrants have been identified for deportation.

Trump has vowed to crack down on illegal immigration while remaining open to legal migration, particularly for skilled workers. India, with its large pool of IT professionals, dominates the H-1B skilled worker visa category, vital for the American tech industry.

Strengthening Trade and Strategic Ties

In addition to immigration, Trump emphasized the importance of balancing trade relations and increasing India’s procurement of US-made security equipment. The US is India’s largest trading partner, with trade volumes exceeding $118 billion in 2023-24 and India maintaining a surplus of $32 billion.

During the call, PM Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to a “mutually beneficial and trusted partnership,” highlighting cooperation in technology, energy, defense, and investment.

Commitment to Quad Cooperation

Both leaders also discussed their commitment to the Quad grouping, which includes the US, India, Japan, and Australia. India is set to host Quad leaders later this year, furthering efforts to counter China’s influence in the region.

Shared Goals for Global Stability

PM Modi referred to Trump as a “dear friend” in a social media post, emphasizing their shared commitment to global peace, prosperity, and security. Meanwhile, Trump stressed India’s pivotal role as a strategic partner in countering China’s dominance.

As their bilateral relationship deepens, the upcoming February visit is expected to address these key issues further, focusing on shared strategic goals and mutual cooperation.
