Indian Lawyer Critiques India’s Work Culture After Six Months in Europe: ‘Peanuts Pay, No Respect’

An Indian lawyer reflects on the stark differences between work cultures in India and Europe, sparking a heated debate online.

February 2, 2025: After relocating to Europe for six months, an Indian lawyer shared her frustrations with the demanding and often unappreciative work culture in India. In a series of candid posts on social media platform X, she contrasted her experience of working in Europe with the challenges of her professional life in India.

The lawyer noted the stark differences in workplace dynamics, saying, “You work past 12 AM on a daily basis, only to earn peanuts and to not be respected as an individual. You have no time for yourself. How have we been living like this?”

“Europe’s Work Culture Feels Kinder”

She highlighted that her workplace in Europe was significantly more supportive and empathetic compared to what she experienced back home. “People are generally kinder, helpful, and more approachable here than back in Delhi,” she added.

While acknowledging that European culture isn’t without its flaws, she expressed regret over India’s lack of clean air, safer roads, and better access to basic facilities. “I’d take that over Blinkit/Zomato any day,” she commented.

Online Reactions to Her Post

Her thoughts sparked a heated debate online. While some users sympathized with her viewpoint, others argued that her comparison ignored the vast economic and cultural differences between India and Europe.

One user wrote, “Not everyone in India works past 12 AM, and not everyone in Europe works 40 hours a week.” Another shared their concerns about the treatment of Indian employees, saying, “I’ve worked with outsourcers in India and have been horrified by how employees are treated.”

A Broader Conversation on Indian Work Culture

Her posts have reignited discussions about work-life balance and the often rigid corporate culture in India. Many echoed her sentiments, calling for reforms that prioritize employee well-being and respect in the workplace.
