
Indian Students Contribute $8 Billion to US Economy: Modi & Trump Pledge Stronger Mobility & Security Ties
Washington DC [US], February 15: Indian students in the United States contribute over $8 billion annually to the US economy and help create numerous direct and indirect jobs, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump acknowledged during a bilateral meeting on Thursday.
The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening legal student mobility, professional exchanges, and short-term business and tourist travel while also aggressively addressing illegal immigration and human trafficking networks to enhance mutual security.
With over 300,000 Indian students studying in the US, their presence plays a vital role in academia, research, and economic growth. The leaders emphasized the need to create a more seamless pathway for legal student mobility.
“President Trump and Prime Minister Modi noted that the more than 300,000-strong Indian student community contributes over $8 billion annually to the US economy and has helped create a number of direct and indirect jobs,” the joint statement read.
To enhance academic ties between India and the US, new initiatives will be introduced, including:

✅ Setting Up Joint Centers of Excellence
✅ Establishing Offshore Campuses of US Premier Institutions in India
