India’s ODI Squad for England Series: Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli Set to Return Amid Rumours

Selectors confirm Rohit and Kohli’s participation in the ODI series against England, while Jasprit Bumrah might be rested due to workload concerns.

January 7, 2025: In a much-awaited update, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are set to feature in India’s ODI squad for the upcoming 3-match series against England starting on February 6. Amid swirling rumours about their exclusion from white-ball cricket, a report by Sports Tak confirmed that the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee has decided to retain the star duo for the series.

Key Updates on Team Selection

While Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli remain pivotal for India’s ODI plans, Jasprit Bumrah might be rested. The ace pacer, who experienced back spasms during the 5th Test against Australia in Sydney, is still undergoing treatment. Given his recurring injury concerns and India’s reliance on him in critical tournaments, selectors are likely to manage his workload cautiously.

Strategic Importance of the Series

The ODI series against England holds significant importance as it serves as India’s final preparation before the ICC Champions Trophy in February. With just three matches in hand, the selectors aim to field an experienced squad to ensure a smooth transition into the marquee tournament.

Bumrah’s Status and Workload Management

Despite missing out on bowling duties during the crucial phases of the Sydney Test, Jasprit Bumrah came out to bat in the second innings. However, his fitness remains under scrutiny, and the management is hesitant to risk aggravating his injury ahead of the Champions Trophy.

India vs England ODI Series Schedule:

  • 1st ODI: February 6 (Nagpur)
  • 2nd ODI: February 9 (Cuttack)
  • 3rd ODI: February 12 (Ahmedabad)

Meanwhile, India’s T20I series against England kicks off on January 22, but both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have officially retired from T20Is and won’t feature in the series. Bumrah, too, is unlikely to participate in the T20 format.

As India gears up for these key matches, all eyes will be on Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to lead the team with their experience and guide India to success in the ODI series.
